16-YEAR-OLD SUSPECT IN POLICEMAN MURDER TO BE TRANSFERRED TO MENTAL CLINIC

The murder of police officer Tigran Arakelyan in Yerevan proved shocking news in Armenia. After one of the attackers turned out to be a minor, the event caused even more heated discussions. 

Full brothers Hrach and Sargis Galstyan (born in 2003 and 2001 respectively) are charged with the crime. Both are under arrest now.

Talking to Armlink.am, Sedrak Mkrtchyan, lawyer of 16-year-old Hrach, said that his client will be transferred to the National Mental Health Center for a forensic medical examination.

The boy was registered at the Nairi MC in Kotayk, his diagnosis being mental deficiency. Hrach says he once attempted to flee the mental clinic.

The tragic incident occurred at the entrance of the Victory Park, in Azatutyan Avenue, Yerevan, at about 4:00am, October 16. Two policemen on duty noticed two suspicious men and pursued them.

They could catch the men, but one of them snatched the government-issue weapon from one of the policemen and fired a shot. Then he assaulted the other policemen, hitting him with the pistol handle.

The policemen were taken to the Grigor Lusavorich medical center.
