Hayk Sargsyan, a member of the My Step parliamentary faction, proposes amendments to the RA Law on Military Service and Serviceman Status.
Persons liable for military service under 27 should be allowed to pay AMD 10m ($20,936) to the state budget for one-month accelerated military training classes.
If during the training the person expresses his wish to serve in the army, the money will be paid back to him and he will serve for another 23 months.
Mr Sargsyan argues that most of the young people avoiding the military service are from rich families. The money should be paid to the state budget, but not to corrupt defense ministry officials. Moreover, many people leaving Armenia and taking their financial means along, which hinders Armenia’s progress.
