President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev intends to dissolve Parliament.
Azerbaijani mass media claim nothing extraordinary is going on. But the problem is that the Parliament is lagging behind President Aliyev’s “outstanding achievements.”
Someone has even claimed that Azerbaijan need no opposition at all, as the president is performing this role as well by severely criticizing the officials and conservative system.
Even in the prime of the USSR such rhetoric by mass media would have sounded ridiculous.
But the point is that we are all well aware of the development in the context of the Azerbaijani political opposition’s recent actions: a rather serious conflict is simmering in that country.
Mr Aliyev must be well aware that he could share the fate of Muammar al-Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein unless the situation changes.
Yes, the recent protests in Baku are striking evidence.
